6-Weekly HGV Safety Inspections (PMIs)
A periodic maintenance inspection (PMI) is the backbone of your operator licence maintenance commitment. We inspect every HGV in our care every 6 weeks, working within the ISO week the inspection falls due, so your planner and your records always line up.
Any defects are reported to you straight away with a clear recommendation, and we can usually fix running defects on the spot. We carry common bulbs, beacons and consumables, and use Jaltest diagnostics for warning lights and electrical faults.
What every HGV inspection covers:
Brakes, brake performance and air systems
Steering, suspension, axles and wheel security
Tyres, lights, mirrors and glass
Chassis, coupling equipment and bodywork
Exhaust emissions, fluid leaks and engine bay
Cab, seat belts, tachograph and warning lamps
12-weekly trailer safety inspections
Trailers in our care are inspected every 12 weeks, covering brakes, lights, landing legs, kingpin, suspension, tyres and curtains or body. If your trailers work harder, or are older, we'll recommend a shorter interval.
Brake performance testing
The DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness expects a laden brake performance assessment at every safety inspection. Through our sister company Brake Test, we can carry out mobile roller brake tests at your site.
Digital inspection reports with r2c Online
All our safety inspections are completed and stored on r2c Online, the compliance platform used by thousands of UK fleets.
Reports emailed to you as soon as they're signed off
24/7 access to your full maintenance history
No lost paper sheets: ready for a DVSA audit or Traffic Commissioner review
Defects and rectifications recorded against each vehicle
Already using r2c Online with another workshop? Switching your vehicles over to us is straightforward; ask us how.
HGV oil and filter changes
We recommend an oil and filter change every six months for most HGVs, plus a full service once a year, scheduled alongside your safety inspections so trucks come off the road as little as possible.
Engine oil and oil filter change
Fuel filters and air filter replacement as due
Coolant, AdBlue, power steering and screen wash topped up
Greasing of steering and suspension points
Full record of the work on your r2c account
Prefer to supply your own parts? We're happy to fit them.
HGV and trailer MOT preparation and presentation
Your annual HGV MOT and trailer MOT go far more smoothly when the vehicle has been properly prepared. We complete MOT preparation the day before the test and can present the vehicle at the test centre for you.
Filters changed automatically
All fluid levels topped up
Full pre-test inspection, with faults fixed
Headlamp aim, emissions and brake balance checked
The result: fewer failures, fewer retests and less downtime.

HGV Inspection and MOT FAQs
-
The DVSA does not set one fixed interval; your operator licence says how often. Most HGVs are inspected every 6 weeks and most trailers every 12 weeks, which is the schedule we run. Older or harder-working vehicles may need shorter intervals.
-
A PMI (periodic maintenance inspection) is the routine safety inspection carried out at the interval stated on your operator licence. It checks brakes, steering, tyres, lights, suspension and more against DVSA standards, and the record must be kept for at least 15 months.
-
The DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness expects a laden brake performance assessment at every safety inspection. We arrange this through our mobile roller brake testing service, Brake Test, at your premises.
-
Every inspection is recorded on r2c Online. You get the report by email once it is signed off, and you can log in to your account at any time to see your full inspection and repair history.
-
We recommend an oil and filter change every six months and a full service once a year, though manufacturer intervals and mileage may change this. We schedule services alongside your inspections to reduce downtime.
-
We complete MOT preparation the day before the test: a full pre-test inspection, filter changes, fluid top-ups and repairs to anything likely to fail. We can then present the vehicle at the test centre for you.
-
Yes. We carry out safety inspections, servicing and repairs on-site across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire, or you can bring vehicles to our workshop in Culham near Abingdon.
